Animated Film Oscars 2014 and shitty journalism.
I’m sorry, but when I saw this I just had to write about it. Holy shit.
An lackluster slate could bring Walt Disney Animation that elusive first Oscar win
An lackluster? Well, that’s a good start. Looks like they don’t proofread (not like I do, but this isn’t a so-called professional website). Basically I think the idea of the article is to weigh-up the pros and cons of the animated films, and say how much of a chance they stand at winning an Oscar. Now, I don’t actually give a fuck about the Oscars because I think the whole thing is a sham and I don’t care whether or not Rebellion wins (if it does, it’d be funny). Let’s take a look at what they’ve actually said about Rebellion, shall we?
Pros: Um. Uh. Anime has its fans?
WOW. Like WOW. Seriously? Is this supposed to be funny? Not only is this a very ignorant and witless comment to begin with, but on a relatively popular entertainment news website? What a fucking joke. What’s funny is that this guy doesn’t seem to understand what anime is. He made a decent attempt when writing about A Letter to Momo and Miyazaki’s latest film, The Wind Rises. In fact, he wrote a fucking lot about the latter. Does the author of this shit not realise those are also anime? Perhaps this was just his cop-out way of not having to write anything because he hasn’t actually bothered to watch it. I can only assume he saw the artstyle and didn’t bother. If that is the case, he’s an ignorant fuck. It’s as if anything that isn’t Ghibli (or something similiar in style and direction) is automatically dismissed. Cool.
That statement pisses me off to no ends. It’s like he’s disregarding it for being anime, totally ignoring that anime has won Oscars in the past.
a series of productions that haven’t made a dent in any awards capacity to date.
Wow, more intelligent comments. One simple Google search will bring up the following awards:
- Television Award at the 16th Animation Kobe Awards
- 12 Newtype Anime Awards
- Grand Prize for animation in the 2011 Japan Media Arts awards
- Three Tokyo Anime Awards in the Television Category, Best Director and Best Screenplay
- Selection Committee Special Prize award at the 2012 Licensing of the Year awards
- Seiun Award for “Best Media” at the 2012 Japan Science Fiction Convention
As well as breaking previous week-one sales records and receiving widespread praise from various, respected sources. Just because they’re not Western awards doesn’t mean they don’t count. And like I said earlier, I think the Oscars are basically an expensive circle-jerk and are worth sweet fuck-all.
You can check out the full rest of their insulting tripe here (please don’t). Feel free to annoy him on Twitter if you like! Surprise, surprise, he loves Pacific Rim. Because that was a really captivating story with excellent examples of fine cinematography now, wasn’t it? It boggles my mind to wonder how many dicks this guy had to suck to get his job.
DAMAGE CONTROL: I should point out whilst I may seem like some butt-flustered Madoka fanboy, it wouldn’t actually matter what he was talking about here. Just the fact that he is being so biased and hasn’t even given a decent amount of thought (and doesn’t seem to have even watched it) is just ridiculous.
